What we’d buy first
We would price WCHE and a commuter radio schedule first, then set a US 30 or US 202 billboard against it and use paid search to catch the people who saw either. Affluent commuters who drive alone make radio and roads efficient here. We ask the billboard companies for availability and prices, and we get real quotes before we recommend a board.

Chesco has high incomes, and most workers drive alone. So the buy usually starts with radio and roadside billboards, then adds local news and search for people who want to look you up. You get a plan that puts your ad in front of affluent commuters without paying for the whole Philadelphia market.

The Daily Local News, MyChesCo, VISTA.Today and WCHE give you four local ways to speak to residents who follow county news. We compare each one against your goal, so you pay for the readers and listeners you want.

US 30, US 202 and PA 100 are the roads we would study for your billboards. Before you spend, we get real quotes and confirm the township rules for each board, so you know the price and the rules first.

We negotiate each client’s buy on its own and report each dollar, so you know where your budget ran. We have worked with Villari Brandes & Giannone on television and print, and with two schools that reach families across county lines.

Where the Chester County buy is planned

  • West Chester The county seat, with a borough population of 18,671, West Chester University, QVC and the Daily Local News.
  • Exton A growth market where US 30, US 202 and PA 100 meet, and where new construction keeps adding households.
  • Downingtown On US 30 and home to the Downingtown Area School District, one of the county’s larger employers.
  • Phoenixville A borough on the northern side of the county where community news and local search carry the message.
  • Malvern A Main Line town in the county’s high-income market, where paid social and print can beat broad radio.
  • Kennett Square The mushroom capital, near Longwood Gardens, with a visitor and local mix that suits event marketing.
  • Coatesville A town on US 30 Business where roadside billboards put your ad in front of drivers passing through the western county.
  • Paoli A Main Line commuter stop where drivers and rail riders both make up the audience.

Reading the Chester County market

Chester County has about 548,000 residents and about 205,000 households, with a mix of colonial and 19th-century stone farmhouses, borough twins and rowhomes, postwar suburbs and planned communities. The Brandywine Valley has estates, and Exton, Downingtown and the western townships have heavy new construction. The climate runs from humid continental to humid subtropical, with four distinct seasons.

The Vanguard Group is the largest private employer, with more than 8,000 county employees. Chester County Hospital, Main Line Health hospitals, QVC (headquartered in West Chester), Giant Food Stores, the Downingtown Area School District, the County of Chester and the federal government also rank among the top employers. Healthcare is the largest industry group at about 27,754 jobs, and the county holds about 9% of Pennsylvania’s finance jobs.

West Chester is the county seat, and West Chester University is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Local landmarks include Longwood Gardens, the Brandywine Battlefield and Brandywine River Museum, and downtown West Chester. Billboard and sign rules are set township by township and by PennDOT, the state road agency, along state routes.

We check the rules for each board before we recommend it. For an advertiser, the county is a high-income, car-based, professional audience with a few strong local outlets. That makes it a good place for a focused plan and a poor place for a scattershot one.

Chesco is the most affluent county on this list, and that changes what a good plan looks like. Median household income is about $127,208, and the average commute runs about 27 minutes. Television comes later, because a single county’s customers rarely need the entire Philadelphia market to see a spot.

The Daily Local News is the West Chester daily. MyChesCo and VISTA.Today are local digital news sites. WCHE is the West Chester talk station on 1520 AM.

We compare each one on readership, price and how well its readers match your goal, then use that comparison when we negotiate, which is how we handle print everywhere. US 30 and US 30 Business cross the county through Coatesville, Downingtown and Exton. US 202 runs through the West Chester and Exton area.

PA 100 runs north from West Chester through Exton toward Pottstown, and PA 113, PA 401 and PA 252 fill in the map, with US 1 in the south and the Turnpike crossing the county. We ask the billboard companies for availability and prices before we quote. Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School and La Salle College High School are examples of institutions that have to reach families across county lines.

What happens next

Our work for Chickie’s & Pete’s, Parx Casino and Villari Brandes & Giannone goes back more than a decade.

  1. 1

    Tell us what you’re launching

Use the form or call 215-870-5548. A few lines is enough — what you’re promoting, where your customers are, and when it needs to run.

  2. 2

    We talk it through

We call you back to ask about your goals and your budget. The first conversation costs nothing, and if another approach suits you better, we’ll say so.

  3. 3

You see the plan before anything runs

You get where your ads will run, the schedule and what it costs, in writing. Nothing is booked until you approve it, and afterwards you see where every piece ran.

Advertising in Chester County: common questions

Is Chester County too affluent for a small-business ad budget?

No. High incomes mean a click or a call in Chesco is worth more, so a modest, well-aimed plan can work. We would use paid search and social ads to reach people in the towns you serve, then add radio or a billboard only where the numbers justify it. A smaller, tighter buy often beats a broad one here.

What is WCHE, and should I buy it?

WCHE is West Chester talk radio, on 1520 AM. It is rooted in the county, which makes it a natural fit for a local business that wants to sound local. We would compare its schedule and price with Philadelphia stations, then choose whichever puts your ad in front of your customer for less money.

How do you find billboards on US 30 or US 202?

We ask the billboard companies. US 30 and US 202 are the major roads, and before we quote we find out which boards are open and what they cost. Once you tell us the audience and the budget, we request availability and quotes, then confirm township and PennDOT rules before we recommend a board.

Can you reach healthcare and finance professionals in Chesco?

We can plan for it. Healthcare is the county’s largest industry group, and finance jobs are a big share of the state total, with the Vanguard Group as the largest private employer. Paid social and paid search can aim at professionals by interest and location, and business publications can support that. We would start with who signs the contract.

Do you use the word Chesco in your advertising?

We use it where people here use it. Chesco is the common short name for Chester County, so it appears in casual headlines and local radio. In formal materials such as legal notices or brochures for out-of-county readers, we write the full name. The choice comes down to who is reading and how they talk.
